Böcker är källan till kunskap

Som ett led i min aklimatisering här i England kostade jag på mig två böcker på lunchen för ett pund styck: Leigh & Woodhouse: Cricket Lexicon och Ruth Wajnryb: C U Next Tuesday – A Good Look at Bad Language.

Cricket-lexikonet kommer jag nog inte ha så stor nytta av eftersom de inte förklarar hur själva spelet går till, utan bara ord som kan användas i referat:

Spoon: If a batsman spoons a shot it is always mistimed and it often offers a dolly to a waiting fielder: ’Steve Adshead spooned a loose drive to cover’; ’Dravid’s dismal run continued, as he spooned a harmless short ball straight down Johnson’s throat’.

Tror att den andra boken är mer användbar om man skall smälta in här:

You can ”get the shits”, ”give someone the shits” or ”have the shits with” someone. You can be ”shit out of luck”, ”not worth a pinch of shit” or find yourself ”in deep shit”. You can ”know your shit”, ”get your shit together” or, either way, ”not give a shit”. There are ”lucky”, ”dumb”, ”crazy” and ”sweet” shits; ”heavy”, ”deep” or ”nasty” shit; ”bull”, ”horse” or ”chicken” shit. Oh, and before I forget, you can also ”throw”, ”sling”, ”catch” or ”cop” shit.

Hon ägnar faktiskt ett helt kapitel bara åt ordet ovan. De andra orden som tas upp skall jag nog inte nämna här om jag inte vill ha min blogg svartlistad för olämpligt innehåll…
